With the sweeping lockdowns and aggressive measures during the COVID-19 US epidemic. Joseph took the opportunity to challenge his artistic journey.

Early in the lockdown period, Joseph began experimenting with abstract line art. This style of artwork morphs from a single line. Many of his pieces are unrecognizable from their beginnings to the end. This is especially true of Joseph’s What Could It Be? piece.

In Joseph’s Elegant Curves piece, he began experimenting with different drawing techniques. A watchful viewer will notice ink droplets in the darkest shading areas of the piece. Joseph later applied this inking technique to one of his pieces, Fruition. With droplets of ink, Joseph created a light and dark texture within his piece with only the use of dots.

This drawing technique is also known as stippling. Stippling is the creation of light and shadow areas within a piece of art with dots. Single-color pigment ink dots are applied with a pen or brush. Reminiscent of pointillism which incorporates multi-color pigment ink dots to simulate blended colors.

Stippling can be used to create a wide range of tonal effects. In the darker areas, Joseph applies a greater number of dots keeping them closer together. To create, exceptional contrast, Joseph will apply fewer dots. In these lighter areas, he will space the dots further apart. Joseph’s outstanding texture is possible with the use of his technical pens. He uses a rOtring Radidograph 0.1mm technical pen for most of his stippling and pointillism work.
